Description
Developing Fractions Sense A
Developing an intuitive understanding of the meaning of a fraction and fraction equivalence
The Developing Fractions Sense Student Workbook A has 32 short lessons focusing on 3rd grade fractions standards, and five enrichment lessons. Fraction blocks are used to convey foundational concepts related to fractions, such as the meaning of a unit fraction, the concept of equivalent fractions and comparing fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator. After learning with the concrete materials, students apply their knowledge to more abstract models, namely rectangular grids and the number line.
Each lesson consists of an instructional component followed by a set of exercises. The enrichment lessons include exercises in adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator, dividing by a unit fraction, and taking a multiple of a unit fraction.
See sample lessons for Developing Fractions Sense A.
Besides its intended use with 3rd-grade students, the workbook may also be used with 2nd-grade gifted students and 4th or 5th-grade students who need a foundation in fractions.
