The Developing Fractions Sense Student Workbook B consists of 45 short lessons focusing on the 4th-grade fraction standards. Each new concept or skill is introduced concretely using fraction blocks or visually using rectangular grids before the student is provided with the symbolic or arithmetic approach. This concrete-to-symbolic approach enables conceptual learning. The focus of the program is on addition and subtraction of mixed fractions having a common denominator, comparing fractions using benchmarks, and multiplication of fractions by a whole number. Students apply the concepts learning to the solution of verbal problems. Click here to see sample pages.
Besides its intended use with 4th-grade students, the workbook may also be used with 3rd-grade gifted students and 5th or 6th-grade students who lack a solid foundation in fractions.
