Description

Fraction Tiles: A Powerful Tool for Conceptual Learning

Fractions tiles are one of the most powerful tools for helping students develop a conceptual understanding of fractions.  The Developing Fractions Sense: Getting Started teacher guide, included with this purchase, presents fraction tile activities involving all four operations. These activities are suitable for students in Grades 3 and up. A sample activity is shown below.

The Developing Fractions Sense A, B and C student workbooks present the fraction standard for Grades 3, 4 and 5, respectively, using fraction blocks, rectangular girds, and linear models.

Please note: In working with the tiles, we do not refer to their shapes; rather, we refer to the yellow block as the whole or 1. In reference to this whole, the red block is 1/2, the blue block is 1/3, and the green block is 1/6. We can then ask, for example, “How many one-third blocks go into 2 1/3?”
