Hands-On Equations 2

Teach your children the joys of learning algebra with Hands-On Equations 2 – for anyone who has completed Hands-On Equations 1.

“This has to be the BEST app ever. If you have a child struggling with algebra or a child you would like to enrich, then this is definitely the app for you. It makes algebra ‘click’!” – App Store review by Stronggirl1

Hands-On Equations Level 2 App

Description

Like the Level 1 app, this app uses the visual and touch features of the mobile device to demystify the abstract concepts of algebra. This is the same approach that has been used successfully by more than a million students in the United States using the physical game pieces.

This Level 2 app is intended for students (age eight and up) who have completed the Hands-On Equations 1 app. In Level 1, the student learned how to solve equations such as 4x+3=3x+9 and 2(2x+1)=x+14 using a blue pawn, whose name is x, and red numbered cubes for the constants. In Level 2, the student learns how to solve equations involving the white pawn, as well as the blue pawn and the red numbered cubes. The white pawn is an unknown like the blue pawn. The name given to the white pawn is “star,” and it is the opposite of the blue pawn.

Dr. Borenson invented a new mathematical symbol for the white pawn, namely an x with a crossbar through it. We cannot display this symbol in this text description of the app and so will simply use the name of the white pawn, “star,” in the equations below.

A video introduction is provided for each lesson. Each video introduction is followed by two examples and ten exercises. It is essential for the student to view the lesson video prior to attempting the examples and exercises for that lesson.

Level 1 consisted of six instructional lessons and a 7th lesson, a review lesson. Level 2 begins with Lesson 8. In Level 2 students learn to solve equations such as 4x + star + 1 = 2x + 5 and 2x – star = 12 using the understanding that x is the opposite of star.

The Ideal Introduction to Algebra

Hands-On Equations is the ideal introduction to algebra for elementary and middle school students. Not only will students have fun and be fascinated with the program, their sense of self-esteem will be dramatically enhanced as they experience success with sophisticated algebraic equations.

High school students struggling with algebra will likely experience success and understanding for the first time as they work with this app.

About the inventor: Dr. Henry Borenson has taught mathematics to inner-city low achieving students as well as to Math Olympiad students at the Stuyvesant High School in New York City. After receiving a patent for Hands-On Equations, he founded Borenson and Associates to disseminate the Hands-On Equations program and the Making Algebra Child’s Play workshop for teachers.

Makes algebra so simple

by Gnote2&3 – Jan 22, 2018

Why? Why did my teachers not have this back in grade school? This would have changed my life. I was turned down from good paying jobs because I couldn’t do algebra. I was afraid of it because of terrible grade school experiences. Want to learn algebra, look no farther, you NEED this app. It’s so easy. I rarely give 5 stars to an app. Maybe it will change your life.

I now understand! My 6th graders are getting it, too! What a great introduction to this difficult subject!

If only…

I’d had this program at 14 years old, I’d have gone much farther in both mathematics and chemistry in high school.

Great teaching tool

This is a great companion to the hands on equations program. I have one student on the iPad and the rest model at their desks. The notion of moving pawns and cube back and forth help with the concept of “legal moves” when learning algebra for the first time. I use level 2 to add challenge for my more advanced earners. Love this app!

Love the simplicity

I like Hands-On Equations because you keep it simple. As an active homeschooling family, we often have to take our schoolwork on the road. Your app makes that very easy – no textbooks to carry, no pencils to lose between the seats, no papers to get muddied in the floorboard or crumpled in a backpack. The best part of Hands-On Equations is that my daughter (who hates math) loves to do algebra! Your program is so simple that she thinks algebra is easy. I have even found her “playing algebra” during her free time – just for fun! Thank you.

Tremendous app!

by Vermont Mom – Version 1.0 – May 20, 2012

We downloaded Hands on Equations level 1 for our eight year old daughter last week. Her eyes lit up and she proceeded to work through the exercises (“Math puzzles, Mom!) in just a few days. She actually turned down the chance to bake cookies at one point because she was having so much fun! She made clear she wanted more as soon as she had finished and began with Hands on Equations level 2 a few days ago. The instructions are clear and the sequential nature of the instruction makes it easy for her to do this on her own, which she also finds exciting. The virtual manipulatives are a wonderful tool. The kids are provided something concrete through which to understand a concept, and the tools are fun, yet without becoming more bells and whistles than functional. This is a wonderful app- without a doubt our favorite math app yet. We recommend it highly!

Hands-On Equations has changed our 9y/o’s way of looking at math!

by Dynamite303 – Version 1.0 – May 16, 2012

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for introducing this concept for teachers/students/parents. This concept has changed our daughter’s outlook on math. She just started a new school 6 weeks ago and the math teacher in her 3rd grade class sent home homework for her to do on her first week and first of all we were surprised at what she was being taught in 3rd grade and secondly upon googling Hands-On Equations, she was thrilled to be able to get apps on her iPad so she could further practice and get better with her algebra. Thanks to the Hands-On Equations she no longer sees math as a drag, she now wants to show us all how the problems are solved…she even makes her own physical little makeshift version of the system with paper and markers. Thank you for sharing this with others =)

Great intro to Algebra

I heard about this program and thought the ideas would work. Then I found this App. It’s awesome, my kids fight to do their math lessons each day. My sons are 10, 12 and I am going to have my 15yo who is struggling start this program.
